This weeks number 1 song (Via CBC Radio 2) and album (As per CKUA) are
Death Cab For Cuties song “Black Sun” as single
Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project as the top album
Two very different bands with 2 very good sounds.
Death Cab For Cutie is a well established American Alternative band out of Washington state that have been playing and recording since 1997. They feature some interesting musical and instrumental variations and the distinct vocals of Ben Gibbard.
Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project features Jayme Stone, a Canadian banjoist. The project is a working of Alan Lomax’s collection of folk songs. Some interesting material here as Jayme has gathered some of North America’s finest folk artists to assist in the making of the album.
A treat this week. CBC2 has a new number one, Sam Smith and his great new song “Stay With Me”. Taken from his début album, “In The Lonely Hour”, it is a wonderfully constructed song, highlighted by Sam’s terrific vocals. This is one song where you can ruminate over your past and remember these times in your life when you indeed, wonder! The song has taken CBC by storm (the top 20 is listener generated by online voting), having only been released a few weeks ago. Enjoy!!
The number one album this week on CKUA is by Conor Oberst. The album is titled “Upside Down Mountain”. Conor is best known for his work with Bright Eyes. He is a very talented singer-songwriter out of Omaha, Nebraska. The song I have chosen to show is “Zigzagging Toward The Light”. A very interesting video. If you get tired of waiting for the music, it starts at the 2:30 mark. worth the wait.
A quick post to let you know I am still around. Life does trump all from time to time, and recent weeks are one of those trump times. Enjoy this cut, a CBC2 find once again, Jamie N. Commons performing the tune “Rumble and Sway, live on Conan. Could be a big one.
Canadian Luke Nicholson released his new album “Mad Love” in late 2012. “Just Fell Down” is a recent release off the record. As seems to be the norm for me, I just heard this on CBC2 this morning and couldn’t wait to post it for you. He has been playing and recording for 15 years and is now seeing his hard work move him forward. Great song. Has a nice pop feel, almost English and a very good chorus.
I believe that if CBC2 did not exist, I would not have a blog. This number is from Canadian songwriter, Toronto based Elise LeGrow. The song, No Good Woman. reached number 6 on Nielsen’s Canadian Adult Contemporary chart in April 2012. Not a new song, but new to me. Her first album was released in December of 2012, and it includes this tune as well as songs written by Ron Sexsmith and Jon Levine. A bit of a push??
