Canada’s Number One Song And Album – May 23, 2014

Hey everyone.  Nice to see you all again.  Took an extended blog break to recharge and renew.  As most of you know, blogging, even the simple things, takes time and commitment.  I love doing this as an outlet and to move things out of my brain.  Gets kind of confusing up there until I spit it out on the keyboard.

Enough of that and on to the number ones in Canada this week.  I use CBC Radio 2 for singles and CKUA for albums for a few reasons.  One, I listen to both and find a wealth of new Canadian music there.  Second, they have charts, which makes my task that much easier.

First up, we have CBC2’s number one single.  This week, The Black Keys and their tune “Fever”.  The band is 12 year overnight sensation with multi-platinum albums such as “Brothers” and “El Camino”.  Fever is taken off their newest album “Turn Blue”.  While I enjoy their non-compromising, straight forward style, I am beginning to become overly familiar with their sound.  I’ll keep listening, but don’t have the same appreciation I had for them as when I first heard Brothers.

Next up is the number one from the CKUA album chart.  CKUA is an anomaly in the radio world.  Publicly supported, ad free, and available throughout Alberta and on the web, it is one of my staples.  You name a genre, they have a show that covers it at some point on their schedule.  Great station.

Their number one album this week is by one of my favorite Canadian artists, Matthew Barber.  He has made my top 10 of the year lists in the past with his stylish songwriting.  The album is titled “Big Romance” and I will feature  “Magnet Eyes” off of it.

That’s it for this week.  Have a great weekend.

Some Canadian talent today.  The Reason are out of Hamilton, Ontario and have been around since 2003.  This song, “Drive Me Home” is from their recently released EP “Hollow Tree”.  The band is an indie group with punk roots.  This tune caught my attention on that infamous evening drive home (pun intended), where I catch a good chunk of my new music via Rich Terfry (aka Buck 65) on CBC Radio 2.  Very catchy song with a good chorus.
