And now for something completely different, Swedish Alt-Country. Yes that is correct. I was going through my email and came across a promo from August 2019. Yes, I know, I’m way behind. I do keep them all though and now that I am writing (sort of) again, I am committed to catching up.
Now about the Trailerpark Idlers. They are from are from Norrkoping/Soderkoping, Sweden and formed as a group in 2006. Since then, they have released 14 albums. This tune, The Green Grass Once Again, is taken from their most recent album, Ghost Town Nights. The band lists their influences, and pretty eclectic, as Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Gillian Welch, Bob Wills, Ramones, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Jimmie Rodgers, Rolling Stones, Ernest Tubb. I can believe it. Interesting band, interesting music. If interested, hit the links down below to find out more.
Covering another person’s song is always an interesting endeavor. The balance between being somewhat recognizable and putting your own stamp on a classic is always a challenge. Making it a better song than the original is also very rewarding. To that end, finding a cover that might just be better is the point of this series of articles. I will post 2 songs, the original, and then the cover. Once you listen them both, pick your favorite in the poll, and voila, we have a winner. First up is Feeling Good, original Nina Simone, the cover by Muse. Lets see what Muse can do with a legitimate classic.
Nina Simone was an American singer, who basically could sing the phone book in all genres, a legend. This song is one of her signature tunes, a hard one to follow.
And now The Muse. An English group, they have a pretty strong body of work as well. So we have the legend versus the challenger, Muse. Your call from here.
Out of Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada, Allanah is an up and coming singer songwriter with a sense for combining rock and pop. Enjoyable tune, recommend you check her out at the links below. The YouTube is her newest release, June 2020.
This Friday’s tribute is to Andre Gagnon, a Canadian composer, conductor, arranger, and actor. Born August 2, 1936, he passed on December 3, 2020. Between 1964 and 2011, he released 41 albums and multiple singles. In 1978 and 1995, he was awarded Juno awards (Canada’s Grammy) as Instrumental Artist Of The Year. Not only prolific, he was also very good. He was especially good at fusing pop and classical music with often great results.
The cut I have chosen is titled “Wow” and is taken from his album “Neiges”, released in 1975.
Heard this somewhere a long time ago, Great song. An interesting collaboration, Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. As the title suggests, I really have no control over what song hits here. I can only say that I liked it enough to search for it. Some songs are old, some are new, but all are new to me at the time.
