Music From The Email Bag – December 15, 2020

Let’s reach deep into the email bag and see what pops out. And it’s Jovani with a song written by an old contact, Max Berga. May I say immediately that he has done a fine job. Very catchy, and, in my opinion, better than a lot of material I have heard in this genre.

I reviewed a song by Max’s previous band, Everywhere. He is now writing and producing and wrote this tune for Jovani, a major star in the Baltics.

Canada’s All Time Top Songs – #98

At 98 is a signature song from former Sweeney Todd singer, Nick Gilder. The track is Hot Child In The City.

Sweeney Todd had a big hit in 1976 with Roxy Roller. After that success, Nick left the band, going solo and signing a record deal in the USA. That deal spawned the featured song which hit number 1 in both Canada and the USA. Unfortunately, he never realized much further success, never again hitting the top 40. He did have success as a songwriter as well, penning hits for diverse artist as Pat Benatar and Bette Midler.

Taken Fom My SHazam – Mayer Hawthorne

I saved this one around 5 years ago. A Long Time is the appropriate name of the tune for this post. LA based Mayer Hawthorne (real name Andrew Mayer Cohen) released this song along with his album How Do You Do in October 2011. The album reached 8 onthe US Billboard R&B chart. Well worth a listen, great album and song. A lot of Motown vibe in this tune, not unlike Raphael Saadiq, who is one of my all-time favorites.

Canada’s All Time Top Songs – #99

At 99 we present We Run by Strange Advance. A Vancouver new wave band, they formed in 1982, and were almost immediately nominated for a Juno (Canada’s Grammy) as most promising band in 1983. We Run was taken from their album, 2WO and released as a single in 1985. It reached number 28 on the RPM pop chart. The band never made strides outside of Canada. In addition, the were mostly a session band and apparently had never played live prior to 1985.

They only released 3 albums overall and essentially went dormant after releasing the 3rd in 1988.

Trailerpark Idlers

And now for something completely different, Swedish Alt-Country. Yes that is correct. I was going through my email and came across a promo from August 2019. Yes, I know, I’m way behind. I do keep them all though and now that I am writing (sort of) again, I am committed to catching up.

Now about the Trailerpark Idlers. They are from are from Norrkoping/Soderkoping, Sweden and formed as a group in 2006. Since then, they have released 14 albums. This tune, The Green Grass Once Again, is taken from their most recent album, Ghost Town Nights. The band lists their influences, and pretty eclectic, as Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Gillian Welch, Bob Wills, Ramones, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Jimmie Rodgers, Rolling Stones, Ernest Tubb. I can believe it. Interesting band, interesting music. If interested, hit the links down below to find out more.
