Amazing as it seems, this album was a number one on the CKUA chart a week or 2 ago, and it has just been released on February 4. How clairvoyant are they. The release of Matt Andersen‘s album “Weightless” becomes official. Having said that, great album. I highlighted a different cut “My Last Day” when I featured it as a number 1 album. This time we will go with “Alberta Gold”. Great tune, which is getting lots of play on CBC 2. This is a REALLY good song.
Serena Ryder’s “Fall” regained the number 1 position on the CBC2 chart. Being how I have already featured her here, I will pick another tune off the chart. When this occurs, I’ll pick a tune that is heading down towards the bottom. In that vein, I have chosen a tune by The Treasures called”Gonna Wait”. It now sits at number 16, dropping 10 spots. The band hails from Toronto and hit the roots style of rock. The video is a live version of the tune.
A bit luckier on the album chart from CKUA as we have a brand new number 1. Rosanne Cash takes over the top spot with her album “The River & The Thread”. The song I have picked is a live version of “Modern Blue” which is getting a lot of airplay on both stations. Great artist with another winner album.
As regular readers know, i am a huge fan of Canadian music, and one of my main sources for my addiction is CBC2 radio, with a dash of CKUA-FM in Alberta. CBC and CKUA both have a Top list, which is released weekly. CBC is a single list and CKUA is an album list. I am starting a new weekly feature that will highlight both charts number 1 (or 2 or 3 if I have already highlighted the number 1). Without further verbiage, lets launch.
CBC2’s chart’s number one this week is from a budding(maybe already is) worldwide superstar, Serena Ryder. A major talent, now breaking on charts everywhere. The song, “Fall” from her terrific album “Harmony”, released in 2012. Another huge hit from the record, following “Stompa”.
CKUA has been quiet on the chart front. latest being January 11. Their number one is “Weightless” by Matt Andersen. The song I pulled from the record is called “My Last Day”. He is a folk roots player out of the Perth-Andover area of New Brunswick. Great song and a great album to score.
This is Jake Bugg’s second appearance on the Song Of The Day, as I highlighted Two Fingers last year. Today’s featured tune is Lightning Bolt and it continues his string of bluesy rock success. This young Englishman was all of 18 when he recorded this song. Amazing raw talent as both a songwriter and player. The video is Jake performing live on Late Night. Not as good as the recorded version, possibly a bit nervous.
